Last Preseason Game

The Southlands basketball team had its last preseason game against Edgewood High School at their home floor. Our preseason had consisted of us being in a tournament and playing other schools that were in our division.

For his specific game, we had much preparation for this. We had played Edgewood in the tournament that we had been in by 6 points so we knew what we were facing. We had gotten film on the previous we had played them so we could look at what we could do better so we could get a definite win. Coach Will wanted to emphasize the importance of staying with our man because we had sometimes been lost while in our man defense while playing with them.

The outcome of the game had us winning by 15 points with a score of 46 to 31.

1st Official Practice

On November 11, the Southlands Christian School basketball team had it's first official practice with all time players
that wanted to play basketball for the school. Some people were not able top play fall league work the team because they were either playing football or focusing on some school work (SAT, college applications, etc.).
We started practice work figuring out the warmups we would be doing every time we would go top practice which included drills that had us doing defensive slides and lay-ups. After doing the warmups, Coach Will had us go into scrimmages with one another. Coach Will wanted to figure out what the players had to offer since he had not seen most of the players play yet and he also wanted to figure out who would be on varsity and JV.
Coach Will then ended practice by introducing an award that would be given at the end of each practice. This award would be given to the player who worked hard the most during practice and showed that they were the person that was really into practice.
Here is Xavier teaching Bradley how to correctly shoot the ball.

Blog 8

1.  What is your working EQ?

What is the best way to coach a high school basketball team?

2.  What is a possible answer to your working EQ? Please write the answer in thesis format.

Training all the players on the team to perform at a high level for a successful team that wins basketball games.

3.  What is the most important source you have used that has helped you come up with an answer to your working EQ?

The most important source that has helped me is my mentor Coach Will because he has actually done what my EQ is asking and has so many kinds of information about High School Basketball.

4.  Who is your mentor, or where are you volunteering, and how does what you are doing relate to your working EQ?

My mentor is Coach Will Robbins. He is the head coach for the varsity basketball team at Southlands Christian School. This all relates to my EQ because he is an actual coach and has had some kind of success when coaching a team which is one way to answer my working EQ.

Blog 7: Independent Component 1 Approval

1.  Describe in detail what you plan to do for your 30 hours.

What I plan to do for the first independent component is to use the opportunity Southlands Christian has given iPoly and play for their Varsity basketball team. I plan to see what the experience is playing on an actual CIF basketball team and see what it takes to be a league championship worthy team.

2.  Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.

I plan to meet the 30 hours by going to practice, playing in all the games, attending team events, and having one on one with Coach Will (the head coach) about his game plan for the team.

3.  And explain how what you will be doing will help you explore your topic in more depth.

I will be doing many things to go more in depth in my topic by seeing how it is to play for a high school basketball team and see what it takes and how to coach a high school basketball team.

4.  Post a log on the right hand side of your blog near your mentorship log and call it the independent component 1 log.

First Practice In The Gym

The basketball team at Southlands Christian School, the school I play basketball for, had their first practice in the gym. We usually have our practices outside at the outdoor courts because the girls volleyball team has their practices in the gym for their season. This was the first time where we had a better place to practice where we wouldn't be slipping on the floors and where it wouldn't be hot. This was also the first time the head coach of the varsity team Coach Will, my mentor and coach, would be watching us and helping us with our game because he is helping the football team during their season. Not that many people came to the practice because it was during the week the students of Southlands had a mandatory retreat to go and the day we had the gym was the day they came back.

After practice had ended, I got a chance to talk to Coach Will about mentorship that included coaching plans and coaching ideas and other things that were basketball related. He had seen the film of our first Fall League game where we were having a conversation about the things I could improve on. He said that I could work more on the agility on my feet where I should get my feet to be able to move faster on the court and about getting in shape for the season. He said there was great potential in me and in our team that we may do well this season.

During practice we did many running, shot many free throws, and finished with a scrimmage/four man shell drills. As you can see in the photo, not many people had attended that practice. Coach Will is in the corner talking to other players on the team.

Blog 5 Project Reflection and Working EQ

Content:
So far, you have: completed your summer mentorship, started doing some research, maybe completed the interview and hopefully found a mentor.
Using what you have done so far, answer the following 5 questions (be specific and use examples).
The Pentagon:
(1) Positive Statement: What positive thing happen as a result of what you have completed so far?
I have been able to play much basketball, which is something I enjoy a lot, in the time since I have started the project. I was able to find many people to interview and people who are very knowledgeable in my topic through playing basketball at Southlands.
(2) EQ Content:  Pick a piece of research or your interview.  How has it helped you improve your understanding of your topic?
My first interview had helped me improve my understanding in my topic by showing more resources that I can use to help me find more research. Coach Mike, my first interviewee, told me many about many people that are also knowledgeable in the story of basketball as well add other resources such as books and videos.
(3) What has worked for you so far in the senior project?
The things that have worked so are finding a mentor and doing the research checks. They have given more knowledge about my topic.
(4) What hasn't worked so far?
The things that haven't worked so far are trying to keep everything on task and trying to do all the assignments on time.
(5) Finding Value:
What is a potential question you would like to study this year?  (working EQ)
What do you plan to do for mentorship?  If you haven't found a mentor yet, then discuss where you are currently looking and who you are talking to to find it.
EQ: What is the best way to coach a high school basketball team?
For mentorship, I plan to play for the basketball team at Southlands and try to absorb all the things that my mentor, Coach Will, will teach me when I am on the team and see the way that he coaches the team.

Blog 4: Interview Preparation

1. Who do you plan to interview? Why?

I plan to interview basketball coach Mike Acuna. He is one of the basketball coaches at Southlands Christian School, which is the school I plan to play for, and has had much coaching experience. Since my topic is focused on high school basketball, he is a perfect candidate for this interview.

2. You have to ask 5 questions. What additional questions do you plan to ask?

  • What made you want to be more in depth with basketball?
  • What other levels of basketball have you played?
  • How long have you been coaching?
  • What are some of the challenges when it comes to coaching a high school basketball team?
  • What are some of your goals in the future with basketball?

Blog 3: Topic Choice and Semester 1 ESLR Goals

1. Topic

Basketball Player

2. What do you plan to do this year to show growth in each of the ESLRs?

  • iPoly Citizen: I plan to be a better iPoly citizen by trying to be a better model for the school by being more involved with the many things the school has to offer and the things that Senior year comes with such as committees and trying to be more active within the school year. I regret not carrying out much the past years at iPoly so I plan to make this year more proactive.
  • Effective Learner: I always try to get my academics organized but have not always succeeded on doing so all the time. My plan is to make sure that I am effective doing all my assignments and always having all the important things that need to be done in my mind such as with core classes and taking classes at Cal Poly.
  • Effective User of Technology: Using technology is a habit when i would need assistance in my studies and will always be integrated in my life. The internet has a vast amount of information and I plan to use it so that I can gain more knowledge and learn more things throughout the year.
  • Effective Communicator: I have always tried to participate in class and try to interact with others when learning, but this would only happen if I was truly knowledgeable on the subject. This year, I plan to be more active in the classes and try to be able to be a better communicator in the classroom with everyone else so that I am able to show that I can be a good communicator.

Blog 2: Summer Mentorship

Literal

1. Summer Mentorship

2. Contact Info: Jules Sanchez (626) 392-7158

3. What questions were raised because of the 10 hours of experience? List them.

  • How can a person take off their nerves when the game is on the line?
  • When does a person know when their game has really improved?
  • How can I perform at the best level possible?
Interpretive

4. What is the most important thing you gained from this experience? Why?

The most important thing that I have gained from this experience is that a person has to be able to utilize all the things they have learned from their fundamentals and the things they have practiced. A person has to be able to use their teammates and other opportunities while playing so that they are able to perform the best basketball possible. They should also be able to stay focused and put everything else in their mind away so that no emotions or distractions are obstacles while a person plays basketball.

Applied

5. How did what help you choose a topic? Please explain.

Playing with my mentor has showed that I am really passionate about this sport and that I want to continue to learn and improve on things that can show I am able to play at the next level and play with the better players. I want to see how much there is more to learn about the sport of basketball and hopefully be able to use them in the future.

2. I really don't have any questions about the senior project. I think have gotten all the information I need to know about the project.

3. The most important part of the senior project in my opinion is the essential question. The EQ is, what I think, the driving force of the project and what leads the project to reach the final product and other parts of the project. The EQ has to be explained properly so that people know what is the basis of the presentation.

4. The topic I am considering doing is basketball. I have been playing basketball since I was a little kid and I feel like basketball may be something that would be fun  to do, and I may be able to learn more things I didn't know about. The service learning may be easier as well since I know.many people that play basketball.
